O'Neill is closer to the top of their shortlist after Gary Rowett pledged his future to Derby County.

DERBY County manager Gary Rowett, who grew up on the Isle of Wight, is set to sign a new deal, according to reports.

Rowett attracted interest from Stoke - who sacked Mark Hughes last Saturday after they lost to fourth tier Coventry in the FA Cup - after impressing again at Derby steering them to second in the table at present.

However, the Rams announced on Tuesday that Rowett has put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year deal at Pride Park, just 10 months after he was appointed by the Sky Bet Championship club.

The FAI had announced past year that O'Neill had agreed a contract extension, however, it later emerged that the deal had not been signed.

The former Burton Albion and Birmingham City manager has enjoyed a 50% win ratio since coming in, to help lift Derby to second in the Championship.
