Cong opposes criminalisation part of triple talaq bill, says Sibal

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) today alleged that the BJP did not want the Triple Talaq Bill to be passed in the Rajya Sabha and its "double standards" were exposed when it "disrupted" the house after the opposition moved a motion to refer the bill to a select committee.

Thursday's Mudda, the daily current affairs show of APN, debated the bill.

The Congress has, however, played it safe and did not open its card during the course of consultation with other political parties.

The standoff between the Narendra Modi government and the opposition over the triple talaq bill is likely to continue as the winter session of Parliament draws to a close.

The opposition tried to prevent Prasad from giving a statement on the proposed legislation, which has provisions to jail Muslim men who give instant divorce by uttering "talaq" thrice. "How will she feed her family?"

Elizabeth McNamara, a lawyer for Macmillan, the publisher's parent company, fired back in a letter to Harder on Monday. Trump, who tried but failed to prevent publication of the book, has denounced it as a work of fiction.

The Leader of House was quick to point out that the Congress is violating old traditions.

She declared, "But if anyone tries to make the law defective by bringing a defective bill then the Trinamul will not spare him". Congress MP Sushmita Dev has suggested the creation of a corpus fund by the government to support such women and their children till they can legally manage to get the subsistence allowance. We must note that this is a civil matter.

Ganesh Singh (BJP) said the government has proved that it was for empowering the OBCs and the Bill underscored this commitment. "It will only make their lives worse", he said.

As the treasury benches accused the Congress of opposing the bill for the sake of minority votes, Sharma said that if the government was honest about women's rights, it would advance a bill on reservations for women as soon as possible. We had presented our model to the government in 2007 where we gave women the right to divorce.

Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress-led Opposition of trying to block the bill in Rajya Sabha by raising the issue of Maharashtra violence.

The joke surrounding Dropbox for years was that the company was set to go public in the fourth quarter of that year - every year. There has been no official confirmation about this just yet, either from Dropbox or Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan for that matter.

They were not opposed to a legislation empowering the women but wanted the bill to be discussed in detail, Congress leaders said.

Akil opposed the bill.

"On one hand, you are sending the man to jail, but on the other hand there is no clarification about who will provide maintenance for the woman and her child, so there are many loopholes", she further said. This bill is no good. And until it is equitable for all women under all clauses of talaq.

"The BJP is doing politics on the issue".

In a 3:2 majority verdict, the apex court said Triple Talaq is unconstitutional and illegal since it is in violation of Article 14 of the Indian Constitution guaranteeing equality before the law. "It requires suggestions from different stakeholders", he said. "We always want the protection of the women of the minority community like we do in case of the Hindus". "They are opposing it to strengthen their vote bank". "Hope the opposition, including the Congress, supports it", he said. Talks on the model Nikhanama had begun 20 years ago. It should not be more than three years...
