5.6-magnitude quake hits western Iran

More than 530 people died in that natural disaster in Iran.

Eight earthquakes struck the Iran-Iraq border area Thursday in apparent aftershocks from a major quake that hit the same area in November.

The temblors hit on Thursday morning, were felt far and wide and even rattled the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

An after-shake of 5.4-magnitude quake shook Soomar again at 11:07 a.m. local time (0737 GMT) on Thursday. It says the quake's depth was 10 kilometers, or 6.2 miles.

It is unclear how much damage was inflicted by Thursday's natural disaster as the epicenter hit one of the most vulnerable areas in Iran's Kurdish region.

In November, a magnitude 7.3 natural disaster struck the same border region between Iran and Iraq, killing 530 people and injuring more than 9,000. There were no reports of significant damage, and electricity and internet services were not interrupted in central Baghdad.
