'I, Tonya' is a smash with Utah audiences - but why?

In the special, which aired Thursday night, Harding confessed that she had an inkling of the plan between her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and his friend, Shawn Eckardt, to attack Kerrigan prior to the 1994 Olympics.

So she watched it a few times, and the shock wore off, and there from the comfort of her living room, sitting beside the only romantic partner she has ever felt loved by and safe with, she watched what had happened in her life and realized that she never really stood a chance. She may well have been more deeply involved than that; the Federal Bureau of Investigation found a paper in her handwriting that passed along details of Kerrigan's practice location and schedule to others involved in the crime. Kerrigan declined ABC News' request for an interview for this two-hour special. With Kerrigan unable to skate, Harding won a spot on the USA team at the 1994 Norway Olympics. There's no doubt that Harding was a victim of Gillooly's violent temper, and her eventual criminal sentence may have been a bit harsh, but I'm not convinced she was quite as innocent as the movie suggests.

"You weren't letting me finish", she snapped.

Moments later Harding interrupted her program because of problems with her skates. Harding, you might recall, accepted a plea deal in that attack for hindering the prosecution of her ex-husband and his flunkies, having knowledge of the assault after it occurred.

Kerrigan was also asked to share her opinion on Harding's return to the spotlight thanks to the film, which portrays Harding somewhat as a victim of her surroundings, detailing her reportedly abusive relationships with her mother and her own husband, Jeff Gillooly.

Tonya Harding walks the red carpet at the 75th Golden Globes. She also agrees to resign from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

But watch as her life is lived with these kooky characters, beginning with Allison Janney in her Golden Globe-winning performance as Harding's mother, LaVona, who makes Joan Crawford look like a lightweight. His attorney, Michael Plonsker , specifically said, "the allegations about the protective guards are not accurate". Acknowledging that he had read "a couple" of the tweets, Franco told a stone-faced Meyers, "I haven't responded".

Since the well-received movie was screened for press members and released to the public, the narrative around Harding has changed, undeniably for the better. Steve Slocum, AP Tonya Harding's coach Diane Rawlinson speaks to reporters outside her home. "Tonya herself called us trailer trash".
