Ronaldo and Messi headline the 2017 UEFA Team of the Year

Barcelona talisman Leo Messi along with his fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo has been tipped to lead the team with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne forming a bolstering midfield.

In a vote decided by 8.8 million fans, De Bruyne has been recognised for his role in Manchester City's stunning form so far this campaign, with the former Wolfsburg man establishing a reputation as one of the finest creative midfielders in world football at present.

The team does, however, include the English top-flight duo of Chelsea midfielder Hazard and Manchester City playmaker De Bruyne, while Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are unsurprising inclusions in the European XI. Players from the Spanish league dominated the team with five Champions League winning Real Madrid players finding mentions.

But there was no place for Tottenham's Kane, who was Europe's top scorer for club and country in 2017 with 56 goals, or PSG's Neymar, the world's most expensive player at £200m.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos received the most votes with 588k and is joined in the team by fellow Real team-mates Marcelo, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
