State Department Revamps Travel Warnings

"The Indian authorities report rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India".

The revised system assigns levels of advice (1 to 4) about travel as it pertains to every country.

Level 4 - Do Not Travel: This is the highest advisory level, warning of "greater likelihood of life-threatening risks".

To warn travelers of potential dangers overseas, the US State Department has updated its travel advisory for countries, including India and Pakistan.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Investigations Bureau (779-500-6551) or Crime Stoppers (815-963-7867). Police are searching for a suspect after a possible armed robbery scare at the Walgreens in Hamburg Wednesday night.

Additionally, reasons for travel advisories will be attached to letters, such as C for crime, T for terrorism, H for heath issues, U for civil unrest and O for other.

The new program, which will provide United States citizens with clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information, includes 4 levels of advice ranging from "exercise normal precautions" to "do not travel".

Moving forward, every country will be given a level ranging from one, being almost no risk; to level four, a do not travel warning. But the USA can not wholly ban citizens from traveling to countries.

The programme, launched by the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs on Wednesday, ranked countries based on the US' assessment of country's security situation with a four-level ranking system. The State Department noted that there "are no USA government restrictions" in tourist areas in both those states, including Ensenada, Rosarito, Tijuana, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and La Paz.

5.6-magnitude quake hits western Iran

This category includes countries like Iran, North Korea, Iraq and Syria.

The US said its new travel advisory is simpler and replaces all previous travel warnings and alerts. It is also tells citizens to "reconsider travel to Nairobi neighborhood of Eastleigh at all times and Old Town in Mombasa at night due to crime". Many countries in Western Europe, where there have been terrorist attacks in recent years, are listed as level 2. Level three countries include Russian Federation, due to civil unrest in certain areas, and Venezuela, due to crime and a limited ability of the U.S. to provide assistance to citizens.

Over the past six months, there have been at least 40 significant terrorist attacks across Pakistan, resulting in over 225 deaths and 475 wounded.

Northeastern states also find a specific mention in the advisory. "In the past, there have been large-scale terrorist attacks resulting in hundreds of casualties", the State Department advisory said.
