Pic: Getty ImagesThe giant consumer electronics show CES has suffered a power cut, plunging part of the event into darkness.

Earlier today, CES 2018 experienced a blackout that lasted about two hours, leaving exhibitors and attendees literally in the dark.

The CES global trade show that seeks to extol the wonders of our connected world just illustrated a big Achilles' heel: Without electricity, not much happens.

The 2018 Consumer Electronics Show was supposed to be that event where all the latest gadgets and gizmos are showed off by various companies.

"We are working hard to restore this temporary power outage at the LVCC [Las Vegas Convention Center]".

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", wrote a statement from the Las Vegas Visitor and Convention Authority, NV Energy and the Consumer Technology Association.

The Las Vegas Convention Center, where CES is taking place, is now experiencing what event organizers are calling an "isolated power outage".

Public service announcements played over an intercom thanking attendees for their patience while the work to resolve the issue continued.

And this wasn't even the first major mishap of the week - on Tuesday, the opening day of the show, heavy rains spoiled the unveiling of Google's massive outdoor booth. Affected areas included the Central and South Hall bridge meeting rooms of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Indeed, it was raining in Las Vegas on January 8 and 9, a rare occurrence for a desert city.

CES is now in its 51st year.

Some companies still managed to do demos on their charged laptops and other devices, while others, such as Samsung, had limited backup power.
