Tough '17 helped Roy turn it around

Tough '17 helped Roy turn it around

After a disappointing Ashes series that saw them lose 4-0 to Australia, England showed they would be no such pushovers in the ODI series with a comprehensive five wicket victory.

Roy, who was dropped during the Champions Trophy last summer, thrashed 180 from 151 balls, the highest score by an Englishman in ODIs, as England completed a record run chase at the MCG to draw first blood in their five-match series against the Aussies.

It is the highest ODI score at the MCG, beating Mark Waugh's 173.

Adam Zampa thought he had the breakthrough when he had Roy given out lbw on 91, but the on field decision was overturned on review. Apart from him, Davi Warner, skipper Steve Smith and Travis Head failed to get a good score.

Australia makes 304-8 in 1st ODI vs England
After plundering 13 fours and two sixes from the first 10 overs, England went the next 10 without scoring a single boundary. Roy's knock was the second-highest ODI score against Australia and the second-highest score in an ODI in Australia .

"I've been very clear in what I want to do in the first 30 balls and working hard on that game plan and sticking to it", Marsh was quoted as saying by The Canberra Times. Solid contributions from No.5 Marsh, allrounder Marcus Stoinis and wicketkeeper Tim Paine were a shining light for Australia during an otherwise disappointing performance.

Three years ago, England looked to the World Cup finallists Australia and New Zealand for the combination of power and freedom that would take them out of the ODI doldrums.

However, Marsh admitted that his failure to convert his half-century into a bigger score played a role in his side's five-wicket loss.

"I guess if you do that, perhaps you're going to have days where you get bowled out for not many but you back your players to come off maybe more often than not and get those big totals", Smith said.

Steve Smith joined Aaron Finch at the crease at the fall of the Warner wicket and just as the pair started to build a solid partnership, Adil Rashid struck to remove Smith for 23.

After the opener at the MCG, the visitors will play the second ODI in Brisbane on January 19, followed by the third game in Sydney on January 21. It had been a tough season last season, so to be selected was incredibly special. Previous best was of 173 by Mark Waugh, which came way back in 2001 against West Indies. Roy took his chance, hitting 84 and 96 alongside Jonny Bairstow.

"I think we probably left ourselves a little bit short (with the bat)", Smith said after the game.

"We then didn't start well with the ball, they got off to an absolute flyer".
