Mirai Nagasu makes figure skating history at the Winter Olympics

Team U.S.A. figure skater Adam Rippon said he has no "desire" to attend the White House with the rest of his Winter Olympics teammates following the conclusion of the 2018 games. But equally impressive might have been the team in third with 62, and how it got there.

Nagasu became the first American woman to land a triple Axel at the Olympics, doing it during the team competition.

Nagasu homed in on the triple axel. "I don't know. It was such this weird thing. I hoped to the last minute that he would be able to compete here, and before my flight to Korea he was the last man who came to support me", she said.

In September, the 24-year-old from Arcadia, California, became just the third United States woman to complete the triple axel in a competition and now, she did it at the Olympics.

But her absence on the 2014 Olympic team, a year in which she placed third at the US championships but was passed over for Ashley Wagner, left her heartbroken.

Whilst Nagasu is born to Japanese parents, she chose to relinquish her Japanese-American dual citizenship once she turned 22.

Just thinking about it makes my head spin, so I'll just stick to watching the professionals. It's one of the most hard moves in figure skating, and Tonya Harding was the first American woman to land it in 1991 at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

For Olympic figure skaters, all those hours, jumps and training are boiled down to around six or seven minutes during the Winter games.

The New Obama Portraits Definitely Brought Out the Internet's Best Meme Game
One wonders how the years in the White House-which, Michelle Obama reminded the country, had been built by slaves-affected her. Flanking their portrait, the former first lady and Sherald revealed the artwork before a thousand phone cams and a livestream.

The first woman to ever land the move during any competition will likely be more familiar, at least to American spectators: Tonya Harding.

Add Nagasu to the list. It was the first jump in her program, and she landed it perfectly. In an article on Team U.S.A.'s website, she said the rare feat would help to reclaim her spot on the Olympic team.

"I had no money", Rippon told NBC Sports figure skating and gymnastics reporter Andrea Joyce after his skate during the team event.

Mirai will also compete in the ladies singles competition later this week. "She skated like she was going to throw it down". His name trended worldwide on Twitter Sunday night.
