Princess Mary devastated after death of Prince Henrik

"His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died Tuesday, February 13 at 23:18 peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace", the palace said in a statement.

The unconventional French-born Danish royal was hospitalized after a trip to Egypt and diagnosed with a benign tumor only two weeks ago.

Henrik is survived by his wife, sons Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and eight grandchildren.

"For the Prince, the decision not to be buried beside the Queen is the natural outcome of not having been treated equally to his spouse - by not having the title and role he has desired", the spokesperson told the wire service.

In one of the world's oldest kingdoms that prides itself on having a stable royal house with no scandals, Henrik caused one in August 2017 by announcing that when he died he did not want to be buried next to Margrethe in the cathedral where the remains of Danish royals have gone for centuries.

In 2016, the Prince renounced his title of Prince Consort and retired from his official duties. According to traditions, men married to female monarchs get the title of prince consort, not a king.

Shortly after, the palace announced that Prince Henrik was suffering from dementia.

He was born Henri Marie Jean Andre Count de Laborde de Monpezat in Talence, southwest France.

He met Margrethe - then crown princess - while stationed in London as a diplomat.

In 1967, Henrik married Margrethe and became her consort when she succeeded her father, King Frederick IX, as monarch of Denmark in 1972. However, he found it hard to fit in with Denmark's egalitarian lifestyle.

"For many years I have been Denmark's number two", he said then.

It wasn't until 1997 that he stood in for his wife at a public engagement for the first time, during a visit to Greenland. He had felt "pushed aside, degraded and humiliated", and his self-respect was being destroyed.

"For many years I have been No. 2", Henrik told Danish tabloid B.T.

Months later he was photographed strolling with friends in the self-governed Copenhagen hippie community of Christiania, known for its cannabis trade, and in June 2014 he dressed up in a panda costume at a charity event.
