Ex-Yankees pitcher Esteban Loaiza arrested on heroin, cocaine smuggling charges

The former All-Star made $44 million in his career pitching for eight teams in 14 seasons.

Loaiza was stopped by officers for a minor traffic infraction Friday after he left his rental home in the Pacific Coast community of Imperial Beach, which is located along the U.S. -Mexico border, according to the Associated Press.

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza (loh-EYE-suh) has been arrested in California on suspicion of smuggling cocaine and heroin.

The former Major League Baseball pitcher, now 46 years old is being held on three felony counts, including possession of cocaine for sale.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported that authorities had been closely watching Loazia prior to his arrest. He was brought over in a trade with the Rangers, which is perhaps how Loaiza is best known in some Blue Jays' circles.

Loaiza was previously arrested in 2006 when he played for the Oakland Athletics.

"He basically told my assistant that he would call back", Boggs said, "and the next thing I know, this (Monday's report) hit". Investigators then obtained a warrant to search Loaiza home where they found the alleged cocaine.

This isn't the first time Loaiza has gotten in trouble with the law. He was being held for lack of $200,000 bail pending Wednesday's court appearance. After watching the pitcher leave his Imperial Beach home, which he just started renting in February, police stopped his auto for a "minor traffic infraction".

Loaiza attended Chicago White Sox SoxFest in January in Chicago, where he met up with fans and took pictures.

A two-time All-Star, Loaiza won 126 games in his career, the second most for a Mexican-born pitcher behind Fernando Valenzuela. He was arrested in 2006, while playing for the Oakland Athletics, after he was caught driving 120 miles per hour on the freeway in his Ferrari and failed a sobriety test. Rivera died in a plane crash later that year.

Loaiza sued the aircraft's owners in 2014 for wrongful death, but Rivera's relatives accused him of trying to profit from her death.
