Oxfam announces comprehensive action plan after 'stain' of sex scandal

Oxfam said Friday it will set up an independent commission to take a look at the organization's practices, with a mandate to investigate past and present sexual exploitation claims.

Numerous charity celebrity ambassadors-including Minnie Driver and Desmond Tutu-have resigned as a result of the allegations. In 2016, there were 80 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by uniformed United Nations personnel and 65 allegations against civilian workers who support the peacekeeping missions, according to a report by Guterres published previous year.

According to the Times, Oxfam knew about concerns over the conduct of Mr van Hauwermeiren and another man when they worked in Chad before they were given senior roles in Haiti.

"I'm really inviting anyone who has been a victim of abuse by anyone in our organization to come forward".

Oxfam will double the number of staff engaged in safeguarding and triple its funding in this area to more than $1 million (800,000 euros), while also increasing investment in gender training.

Byanyima added the organisation is hurt by the conduct but it can not shut down us, the world needs Oxfam.

He added that he respects the charity enormously and said the people he's dealt with have "been nothing short of heroes to me".

The 48-year-old later said on Twitter that she was "devastated by the response" of Oxfam which she had been "raising awareness for since I was nine years old".

An Oxfam spokesman said it had identified that "one of those dismissed by Oxfam as a result of the sexual misconduct case in Haiti" was "subsequently hired by Oxfam as a consultant in Ethiopia".

Staffordshire residents have been left questioning their views on donating and giving to other charities in the future, after the recent Oxfam scandal.

The 2011 Haiti investigation will be published by the charity with names of witnesses redacted, while the new commission's record of historical cases of sexual misconduct will also be made public.

"We are aware of The Times' investigation of Oxfam UK members and their conduct in the Haiti natural disaster response".

"Oxfam must do everything in its power to heal the damage to those who depend on both its work and the good faith and generosity of its supporters".

He said his government "is willing and getting ready to take legal action against individuals" involved in the scandal - possibly including van Hauwermeiren and members of his staff.

Oxfam has confirmed that it dismissed van Hauwemeiren past year over the allegations; however, he said in the Dutch-language letter that he left of his own accord after failing to control rumors of sex scandals.

"Now more than ever, CAFOD is committed to a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct breaching our Code of Behaviour, including fraud, abuse, sexual misconduct, intimidation and other acts", the charity said.
