UKIP in turmoil again after sacking leader Henry Bolton

MEMBERS OF BRITAIN'S Ukip party have voted to remove party leader Henry Bolton from his role following controversy over racist messages sent by his partner.

At a crisis meeting in Birmingham today party members voted by 867 to 500 to express their lack of faith in his ability to lead the party.

Bolton's personal life made headlines in December after news broke that the 54-year-old had left his wife and young children and had begun a relationship with Jo Marney, 25, a fashion model.

The party announced Gerard Batten MEP would take over as interim leader.

But a member of the party's NEC from Kent said the party would have been "terminally split" had Mr Bolton survived.

Bolton had been determined not to expose Ukip to another leadership context.

But he refused to step down after the resignation of a number of senior party figures and a unanimous vote of no confidence in him by its National Executive Committee (NEC).

Speaking after the result, Mr Bolton said he had not finished in politics and was "batting around" various options for the future.

"A particular problem is we have got local elections in May - this time in 2014 we were already well down the campaigning route and we have done nothing".

And on Friday Mr Bolton criticised the media scrutiny into his private life following the breakdown of his marriage to Tatiana Smurova and his new relationship with Ms Marney.

"There's probably been nothing like that since the Profumo affair or Diana and Dodi al Fayed".

Bolton, who was elected last September, was the fourth leader of the beleaguered party in 18 months, following Nigel Farage's exit after the European Union referendum.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Friday, Mr Farage said: "I believe it would be better to allow Mr Bolton, with all his faults, the chance to turn UKIP into an electoral machine again".

He declined to elaborate and did not answer when asked if one was to set up an alternative party.

Despite losing the motion, Mr Bolton is still eligible to stand again in the forthcoming leadership contest, which will be held within the next 90 days.

"It may be too late to save UKIP, but you never know".
