Hosmer, Padres agree to 8-year, $144 million deal

The Padres and free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer have agreed to a deal, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. In the end, the Padres were willing to go with eight years, and that was enough to persuade Hosmer to head to San Diego. Wil Myers, who was tagged for the position earlier in the offseason, is expected to shift over to a corner outfield spot while Jose Pirela and Hunter Renfroe compete for the other corner.

Hosmer, 28, played in a career-high 162 games for Kansas City last season and hit.318 with 31 doubles, a triple, 25 homers and 94 RBIs.

Hosmer was drafted 3rd overall by the Kansas City Royals in 2008. Hosmer will make $105 million in the first five years.

Hosmer's contract will be the largest in Padres history at $144 million, according to a report from Scott Miller of Bleacher Report.

"Everybody here's excited to see about a move like that", Myers said, "to see the Padres are very serious about what's going on". Martinez, remain unsigned. The rumor that Hosmer wanted more than seven years and close to $150 million was laughed at last month.
