Florida lawmakers may allow teachers to have guns. But will GOP Gov

Senate File 71 seeks to expand the state's "castle doctrine" law under which those who use deadly force in the home do not have to consider if it's reasonable to retreat.

The GOP-controlled Senate voted Tuesday to approve legislation that would ban localities from restricting the enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Senate Bill 48, sponsored by Sen. Even teens under 16 can marry in cases of pregnancy - something critics say is evidence of a sexual crime given a minor under 16 is too young to give legal consent.

The bill was approved by the House on February 27 with a 42-11-3 vote with Rep. Mike Greear, R-Worland, and Rep. Nathan Winters, R-Thermopolis voting in favor.

But other states have pushed back against the similar measures. Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, said the bill could come up for a Senate vote later this week, perhaps as early as Thursday.

The conservative group that's protesting against the bill goes by the name of The Family Foundation.

Shortly after the Senate limited which teachers would be allowed to be armed, the governor's office called the move "a step in the right direction", but by Tuesday night, Scott's office had restated his opposition.

The committee approved a substitute which retains most of Adams' original bill but provides an opportunity for parental participation - although the judge would have the final say in whether a teen under 18 is allowed to marry.

Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear has agreed with them, issuing a letter to lawmakers which contends the bill violates the inviolable contract by rolling back 21 previously promised benefits or provisions.
