Gunfire and hostages taken at California veterans home

The 600-acre campus opened in 1984 and is home to about 1,000 residents, according to CalVet - including veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

But Napa County Sheriff John Robertson told reporters that about 80 students were near the area where the hostages were taken but were never in danger.

Larry Kamer told the Associated Press a gunman quietly came into a going-away party and staff meeting at the home and let some leave while keeping others hostage.

According to the LA Times, the Veterans Home of California-Yountville is one of the nation's largest veterans care facilities with more than 840 veterans residing on its 600-acre campus.

Yountville is about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco.

AP News reports that a gunman has taken hostages at the Home. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has also dispatched a SWAT team to the scene.

Residents were temporarily evacuated from the veterans home in October when fires raged through Napa County.

The Napa Valley Register reported that a man with an automatic weapon was reported at the Napa Veteran's Home.

The Pathway Home is a privately run program on the veteran home's grounds, in the wealthy Napa Valley town of Yountville.
