China passes law to allow President Xi Jinping to rule for life

The National People's Congress voted to remove a clause in the constitution limiting the president and vice president to two consecutive five-year terms.

China had imposed a two-term limit on its president since the 1990s.

Xi's political theory, "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era", was also enshrined in the constitution, effectively making criticism of the president unconstitutional.

Of the almost 3,000 delegates to the congress, 2,958 voted in favor. The delegates voted 2,958 in favor, with two opposed, three abstaining and one vote invalidated.
