Helicopter crashes in New York City's East River

Witnesses said they saw a red helicopter rapidly descend near the north end of Roosevelt Island, which is between Manhattan and Queens, and plunge into the river shortly after 7 p.m. The NYC Ferry said late Sunday on Twitter that service on the Astoria and East River routes was now suspended until further notice because of the helicopter crash. "One of the most hard parts of the operation, we're told, is the five people besides the pilot were all tightly harnessed, so these harnesses had to be removed in order to get these folks off of this helicopter, which was upside down at the time". The New York Police and Fire Departments have already been dispatched to the scene.

A helicopter carrying six people has crashed in New York City's East River, killing all five passengers on board.

The helicopter, a private charter hired for a photo shoot, went down near Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence. The pilot was able to free himself, but the passengers were not able to get out - he was taken to the hospital, and is expected to be okay.

The photographs, taken on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test, have since gone viral on social media. Cricket Australia chairman David Peever is due to arrive in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

"The pilot is OK", Nigro said. But the pilot appeared on the surface, holding onto a flotation device as a tugboat and then police boats approached.

A witness told the New York Post she "immediately thought someone was in there and not going to live - it's cold water, it was sinking really fast", said Mary Lee.

The NYPD and FDNY confirmed rescue operations are under way. Police said he was treated and discharged from hospital in good condition.

Trump said Thursday that he was slapping tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum, temporarily exempting big steel producers Canada and Mexico.

One source told The Post that the pilot had made an emergency call to New York's LaGuardia Airport air-traffic control tower before crashing.

Kaderia Melchon was walking in Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan when she said she spotted the helicopter descend into the water. Crashes are not unheard of.
