Just in Time for Spring Break

Just in Time for Spring Break

Ava DuVernay is quickly becoming a household name.

It's an extraordinary fact, considering the trajectories of most Hollywood directors. Who is - oh, she's, like, a billion years old and way more knowledgeable.

"That's the difference between what the film is versus the book", she continued, "and the choices we made that evoke the film, but also look at what the film needed to be".

I feel like there were a lot of challenges.

As a classic of children's literature, A Wrinkle in Time has been ripe for a big budget film adaptation for years.

Bengal has an anti-BJP political space: Singhvi
On Friday, Left Front too announced CPI (M) state secretariat member, Rabin Deb as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls. With TMC's backing, Singhvi's victory is confirmed.

"I want [audiences] to feel empowered and inspired and like they can do anything they want to do", Reid says. "I'd done "Selma" and 'The 13th.' How did they even think that would work?" I loved movies like Labyrinth or The Neverending Story that took awkward, smart kids out of their normal lives and into unusual new universes with uncertain rules and surprising, colorful characters.

Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon in a scene from Disney's 'A Wrinkle in Time'. I was deep in the heart of Meg and thinking about it.

DuVernay laughed that Winfrey recounted that moment.

"She was so flawless in the role", DuVernay added. I felt like I was giving it over to good hands. "It's the kindest set and it's going to be a magical movie", she said. Close your eyes, find "the right frequency", and you're off.

Ryan Coogler, another great director on the rise, took to ESPNW to pen a supportive tribute to DuVernay and her new film. She quotes Shakespeare, Gandhi and other notable figures throughout the film. I kept expecting a big reveal that would wrap these insane frayed ends together and help the story make sense to me, but it never came. Pre-weekend tracking had the film making around $8 million. She really values the creative process and the people that surround her that are helping craft her vision.

Miles had a chance to clinch the game from the foul line with 6 seconds left, but he only made the first of two free throws. There was some bleeding in his eye and he spent the rest of the game holding an ice pack on it. "We just have to be ready".

That's when her NASA scientist father (Chris Pine in a brief but strong appearance) disappeared, shortly after telling the world that people could travel the universe if they just find "the right frequency" and channel their thoughts in that direction.

Want more stories like this? If you can do that, the film becomes an enjoyable ride.

And indeed there is still that idea that female filmmakers are not given second chances, even when they succeed. The author claimed in a 2001 interview that the criticisms did affect her, but at the end of the day, she learned to live with it. The heartbreak at the core of the story is the anchor that makes this Wrinkle work as well as it does. The next week he's the director of another thing. The decision to let the actors' faces be an anchor throughout isn't always successful - there are times when it would be more exciting to see what the characters are seeing, as opposed to their faces in extreme close-ups - but it often leans harder on the emotional side of things as opposed to the story's intellectual foundation. Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" is so far one of the biggest projects she has taken on since her directorial debut.

"Wrinkle", however, is film that is first and foremost for children ages 8 to 12, DuVernay says. A large part of the film's message is self-awareness and self-love, and it's important that this message comes to audiences through the experience of a young girl of color, addressing universal pre-teen feelings of awkwardness or self esteem issues through a character who relates to more than just a white audience. Some of them, it's not (going to be) for them. I'm ok with that. Those images? I'll risk it.
