Russian Federation successfully launched powerful new missile

Putin, who is widely expected to be re-elected as Russia's president later this month, claimed the missile that flies at 10 times the speed of the sound can not be intercepted by air-defense systems.

The ministry released video footage showing two pilots gearing up for a flight and then running towards a jet with a large missile slung beneath its underbelly. Russian officials said the missile - named after a type of dagger - successfully hit the assigned target, the BBC reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country has developed supersonic nuclear weapons that can reach anywhere in the world, and are "invulnerable to enemy interception", during his state of the union address to Russian lawmakers in Moscow on March 1.

The Kinzhal is said to travel at 10 times the speed of sound and have a range of 2,000km (1,200 miles). The massive twin-engine MiG-31 remains the fastest operational fighter capable of clocking a top speed close to Mach 3. "The attempt at curbing Russian Federation has failed", Putin said. "The hypersonic missile confirmed its technical operational performance and timing data of the Kinzhal missile system".

Kinzhal air system crews have conducted hundreds of tests emulating attacks made from a position of defense.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that, with Russia's presidential election approaching, Putin "was playing to the [domestic] audience, certainly".

Using colorful graphics and video, Putin said Russian Federation had also tested a nuclear-powered cruise missile and a high-speed underwater drone capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that, he claimed, would be impossible to intercept.

"I saw no change to the Russian military capability, and each of these systems he [Putin] is talking about that are still years away, I did not see them changing the military balance", Mattis told reporters in Oman.
