France's Macron pledges €700m to solar energy push

It was India and France who front-ended the attempts to set up ISA and launched it on the first day of the United Nations conference on climate change held in Paris in November 2015. With the United States under its President Donald Trump foolishly pulling out of the agreement, other nations have chose to step up their efforts. The first one, called scaling solar applications for agricultural use, aims to promote solar water pumps instead of diesel pumps for irrigation to benefit both farmers and the environment.

Modi, who had jointly launched the global alliance with the then French President Francois Hollande at the Paris Climate Summit in December 2015, has been encouraging energy efficiency to slow down global warming.

It is no wonder then that ISA will be headquartered in Gurgaon in Delhi's suburbs, the first time that an worldwide treaty body will have its secretariat in India. Of the 121 countries associated with ISA, 61 have joined the alliance and 32 have ratified the framework agreement.

French President Emmanuel Macron says he hopes his country can sell more fighter jets and submarines to India.

Japanese Trade Minister Hiroshige Seko said he had expressed Japanese concern to Lighthizer and warned of major market disruption. China can handle any challenges and will resolutely protect its interests, but the two countries will continue to talk, he said.

Today, on the occasion of the inaugural conference of the International Solar Alliance, ISA, the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA, Adnan Z. Amin, and the Interim Director-General of ISA, Upendra Tripathy signed a Joint Declaration to deepen the cooperation between the two organisations to accelerate solar energy deployment.

Also, this gathering is required to goad advancement in renewable energy space and to help make India a technological center in the segment and not simply remain a re-exporter of Chinese photovoltaic cells.

In his speech, French President Emmanuel Macron took a swipe at US President Donald Trump for backing out of the Paris climate agreement without naming him.

So many heads of state were present at the meeting that a traffic issue was sent to the already bustling Indian capital on Friday morning, warning that jams were expected throughout the weekend as world leaders arrived, with solar as the key talking point.

Despite an abundance of sunshine in Ghana, with many parts of the country enjoying high levels of solar irradiation (5.524 kwh/m2/day), all year round, President Akufo-Addo noted that solar energy only contributes 1% to the energy mix, as opposed to 59% from fossil fuels, and 40% from hydro. There are financial hurdles, regulations, capacity hurdles as well. "We shall therefore lift every single one of them", he added. To that effect, it is not enough to look at what governments are doing.

But the efforts of governments were not enough to achieve the 2030 goal and private sector industry, global institutions and civil society would have to join in, Macron added.
