At the White House meeting, a number of lawmakers suggested to Trump that he alone had the credibility with gun owners to make something significant happen.

Sessions on Monday directed the FBI to identify localities that are not fully reporting information about arrests and mental health records to federal authorities.

The plan forgoes an endorsement of comprehensive background checks for gun purchases, which the president, at times, seemed to embrace.

Sessions told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that people who can't legally own guns shouldn't be able to pass background checks "simply because information was not available to you". He has also voiced support for existing bills aimed at enforcing the background check system and encouraging students and teachers to report suspicious behavior.

But the Trump plan falls far short of additional steps needed to curb gun violence. Trump tweeted on Monday, adding "On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting". Even though he supported it, the president described the latter measure as untenable in the current political climate.

The tour closed with two worldwide dates in Paris, France that was filmed for an HBO special that received an Emmy nomination. The tour begins June 6 in the United Kingdom and will span European cities and 21 North American stops.

Trump released the White House's plan for school safety that included arming the school staff, but the age restriction change to 21 was not included in that plan. The officers arrive to find chaos as delays allowed the shooter to flee.

For anyone who has followed the gun-control non-debate in Washington over the past two decades, and has observed Trump's fourteen-month tenure in the White House, this outcome was sadly predictable.

Sanders protested: "Look, he hasn't backed away from these things at all". "Some of them I like very much, but I can't support them".

At the same meeting February 28 with lawmakers where he discussed raising the gun-buying age, Trump alarmed gun rights activists by suggesting he would confiscate guns from people who posed threats, then "go through due process".

The Trump administration wants to help states provide teachers with "rigorous" firearms training, a White House official said Sunday night during a call with reporters describing the administration's efforts to prevent school shootings. We're also frustrated - yet hardly surprised - that the president has broken his promise to seek an increase in the minimum age to purchase some weapons.

Seventeen people were killed in last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, prompting a national conversation about gun laws, fierce advocacy for stronger gun control from surviving students and, initially, a move from Trump to buck his allies at the National Rifle Association.

But regarding age limits, he said, it would be left to individual states to act. "States are making this decision", Trump wrote Monday, making an apparent reference to Republican Gov. Rick Scott's decision to sign a state law requiring gun buyers be 21 and imposing a three-day waiting period on most gun purchases. Nonetheless, Trump tweeted earlier Monday that there is "not much political support (to put it mildly)" for the proposal.

Under pressure from gun rights groups, President Donald Trump has backed away from raising the minimum age for gun purchases from 18 to 21, one of several measures he had supported after the latest USA school shooting.
