Treasury Secretary: Focus on Trump's Actions, Not Racial and Vulgar 'Funny Moments'

Treasury Secretary: Focus on Trump's Actions, Not Racial and Vulgar 'Funny Moments'

"When he uses vulgarity to talk about individuals, what are they supposed to tell their kids?"

On Monday's broadcast of the Fox Business Network's "Varney & Co.", Fox News host Howard Kurtz responded to President Trump's statements about "Meet the Press" anchor Chuck Todd over the weekend by saying it "was a mistake".

"The booing is getting stronger by the day whenever he goes out there and whips up like it's a Mussolini rally", he said. The president's train of thought began with North Korea, a topic he'd been asked about on Meet the Press almost 20 years ago: "Did you ever see the story where, it's 1999, I'm on Meet the Press, a show now headed by sleepy eyes Chuck Todd", Trump said.

While Todd did not refer to the president's insult specifically, he did refer more vaguely to "vulgarity" used by Trump. "This is exactly the presidency he said he was going to have, that he was going to do things differently, disrupt Washington, make the establishment insane, make the media angry", he said.

The Saturday rally wasn't the first time that Trump has referred to Todd as being "sleepy". "I am very comfortable with what we're doing, okay?"

"You should obviously carry them", Mnuchin said. "You know he likes to put names on people". He did that throughout the entire presidential election. "But again, don't take these campaign rallies and focus them on that's what it is".

The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said: "Syria is bleeding inside and out". He ended by quoting Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz: "They are liars.

I asked Todd in our interview Friday why he thought the president had such an obsession with him.

Todd continued to lecture about role models, but Mnuchin said his focus is on policy, though he did note that "there were a lot of amusing moments on that rally".

Speaking to Chuck Todd on Meet the Press yesterday, he said Trump's jibes must be seen in the "context of a campaign rally". "I think this last week, these last 10 days of him is the presidency he's dreamed of".

Nonetheless, Trump tweeted earlier Monday that there is "not much political support (to put it mildly)" for the proposal. Even though he supported it, the president described the latter measure as untenable in the current political climate.

Mnuchin earlier said the president "likes making amusing names" for his opponents, adding: "This is something that is at a campaign rally".

"Yes, they were hilarious", Todd dryly responded.
