Amazon recalls 260000 chargers after fires, burns reported

The recall will be carried out in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and will be focused on six models of Amazon's house-brand power banks sold over a almost three-year period.

You might want to pay attention if you purchased an AmazonBasics power bank over the last couple of years. The power banks, sold between December 2014 and July 2017, have a risk of overheating, which can cause the unit to melt, posing a fire hazard.

After receiving more than 50 reports of overheating, six different version of AmazonBasics portable batteries are being recalled. Those are model numbers B00ZQ4JQAA, B00LRK8JDC, B00LRK8IV0, B00LRK8I7O, B00LRK8EVO and B00LRK8HJ8.

Fortunately, there are about a million more power banks on Amazon right now that won't catch fire.

The AmazonBasics logo is printed on the front of the unit.

Amazon is sending out emails to those who have purchased the power banks, recommending they immediately stop using them.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says that about 260,000 units are affected. Says the CPSC, Amazon has been on the receiving end of 53 reports from U.S. customers who experienced device overheating.

Amazon has received more than 50 reports of the power banks overheating in the US, causing chemical burns and property damage.
