Dion Lewis' $11.5 million in guarantees too rich for the Patriots

Dion Lewis' $11.5 million in guarantees too rich for the Patriots

Butler's defection to Tennessee marks the second straight year that a Patriots cornerback will have left in free agency to join the Titans. Instead, he signed for a below-market one-year, $3.9 million tender that would allow him full-fledged free agency this spring.

Butler is most famous for his interception at the goal line in Super Bowl 49 to seal the victory for the Patriots over the Seahawks. The team also signed Logan Ryan away from New England a year ago, so it appears that Ryan and Butler will figure into the position prominently, along with 2017 first-round pick Adoree' Jackson. Tennessee has approximately $59 million in salary cap space after releasing running back DeMarco Murray and three other players last week. Butler spent the past four seasons with the New England Patriots. After a slow start, he ended up playing 98 percent of New England's defensive snaps and finished the season with two interceptions. Butler is reunited with Ryan, his former Patriots secondary running mate.

His deal is reportedly guaranteed for $11.5 million.

The Titans ranked 13th in total defense and improved slightly against the pass, giving up 239.3 yards through the air to move from 30th in 2016 to 25th overall.

Brees, Saints agree to 2-year, $50M deal
Indeed, the Saints' future is seemingly brighter than it's been in years, but Brees' deal was the 600-pound elephant in the room. I think he's the best there is. "I love my team and am excited about the opportunity we will have together", Brees said.

Butler and Lewis will play for former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel and former Pats personnel man Jon Robinson, who are now the Titans' head coach and general manager, respectively. Devin McCourty served as the leader of the defensive backfield in each of Butler's campaigns in New England, and the star safety clearly was excited about the 28-year-old's new contract.
