Manchester United have also been in talks with De Gea over a new contract and the Spaniard could soon become one of the best paid players at the club.

The 27-year-old was close to joining Real in August 2015, but the move fell through in the final hours of the transfer window as the paperwork was not completed in time.

Amid reports that reigning European champs Real Madrid were due to once again test the waters with a bid for De Gea, Mourinho told Spanish outlet La Sexta the following.

"I see him (De Gea) here".

However, Mourinho is confident De Gea will remain at Old Trafford beyond the season. In January they were on the verge of inking Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga before he signed an extension.

"I don't know the intentions of Real Madrid, but if I were them, I would think about another player".

De Gea has kept 15 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, more than any other goalkeeper.

De Gea helped United beat Gerrard's beloved Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday, so maybe the former Reds captain is still a bit bitter following that result.
