Reno man dies in NY chopper crash, reports say

Investigators recovered a flight data recorder and a GoPro camera Tuesday as they tried to determine the cause of a deadly helicopter crash in New York City's East River and figure out whether passengers' harnesses hindered their escape from the sinking aircraft.

The pilot may have gotten himself free because he knew what to do in that situation, ABC News reported.

NTSB spokeswoman Bella Dinh-Zarr said at a press conference this afternoon that the crash occurred at 7:08 p.m. ET Sunday and her team "will be looking at other sister helicopters and see if this helicopter's harnesses were functioning and if the passengers were using them".

Former NTSB managing director, Peter Goelz, said that it's not uncommon for there to be more helicopter crashes than airplane crashes as "helicopter companies tend to have higher rates of accidents than fixed-wing operations, in part because they're harder to fly".

"We negotiated a deal that successfully cut in half the number of tourism helicopter flights leaving from New York City heliports".

"That's when it kind of really dawned: That helicopter isn't coming back", Adams said.

"I'm shocked by the tethering and the lack of a quick release", said Shawn Coyle, a helicopter pilot, safety consultant and author of books on flying.

As questions continue to swirl around how and why this happened, a number of aspects of the East River helicopter crash have come under scrutiny. Investigators say a strap from a passenger's safety harness may have inadvertently wrapped around a fuel shut-off lever, resulting in engine failure which sent the aircraft plunging into the frigid water.
