Venus Williams Defeats Sister Serena For First Time in Four Years

Venus Williams defeated Serena Williams for the first time in almost four years, getting past her younger sister 6-3, 6-4 on Monday in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

Serena may still be a bit rusty, having only just returned to the game after giving birth to her first child, but the younger Williams sister seemed more shocked at the level of her sibling's play, not her own. They had also played each other five times-the very first being 20 years ago at the Australian Open 1998-and then came their first schedule meeting at Indian Wells.

Serena was a mere shadow of her past self and managed to win just 54 percent of her first serve points in the first set.

"This will be the 29th time the sisters have played each other in a Women's Tennis Association match and first since the final of last year's Australian Open, when Serena Williams was a 6-4, 6-4 victor". She will take on No21 seed Anastasija Sevastova for a place in the quarter-finals after the Latvian beat Julia Goerges, 6-3, 6-3. "That's all I see", Venus said.

"It's different, I haven't played in over a year". I think they hardly played any juniors, really, which made it more of a mystery, because you just didn't know exactly what to expect from them. And there was prevalent rust, even in her two wins.

Venus's victory also comes 17 years after an ugly booing incident led to a 14-year boycott of the tournament by the sisters. "She was asking what she was doing wrong, and I was trying to tell her she was rushing too much", Mouratoglou said.

For a moment, the best women's player in the history of tennis displayed rare vulnerability.

Venus broke Serena at love in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead in the first set.

Serena spoke late Saturday about how she was not back to 100 percent and is taking her comeback one step at a time.

Said Serena Williams at the end of Monday night's match: "There's a silver lining always for me".

Wozniacki said the court conditions were hard but she managed to make adjustments.

She closed out the one-and-a-half-hour match on her second match point when Serena's forehand service return sailed long. It definitely felt better than the first round, but I'm still a little rusty. Even with the baby, like, a trial run of traveling with the baby and all of this is just so new to me.

Her stamina appeared to get better as the match progressed, and she won several long points.
