Merkel elected to fourth term as German chancellor

The vote in parliament ended nearly six months of political turmoil after a federal election saw millions of voters desert the two mainstream parties - Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) - turning instead to parties on the left and right.

"A clear vote and a smooth start", tweeted Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the new general secretary of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union. Her Christian Democratic-led bloc is allied with the Social Democrats, renewing the "grand coalition" that governed Germany for the last four years.

Angela Merkel has been elected for a fourth term as German chancellor.

This fourth term in office is expected to be the last for Merkel even though German legislation does not limit the number of years a chancellor can serve.

Lawmakers voted 364-315 re-elect Merkel, Germany's leader since 2005.

Another surrogate questioned the decision-making behind Clinton's remarks. Predictably, gleeful Republicans seized on her polarizing comments.

"I accept the vote", Merkel told parliamentarians.

But she finally secured a coalition deal with the Social Democrats (SPD) earlier this month following a painful stretch of political deadlock.

At the time, Merkel said close cooperation would be offered on the basis of continued shared values such as "democracy, freedom, the respect for the law and the dignity of human beings, independent of their origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political position".

He said he attaches great importance to the development of the China-Germany relationship and is willing to work with Merkel to consolidate and boost mutual strategic trust, lift ties to a new level and achieve greater progress.

It cost her several key posts - including finance and foreign minister - in Germany's new cabinet.

Germany's Angela Merkel will head to France on Friday, the first foreign trip of her fourth term as chancellor, to discuss bilateral, European and global topics with French President Emmanuel Macron, a German government spokesman said, Reuters reports.

Merkel will head a much-changed new Cabinet.

At home, Merkel will have to hold together potentially her most fragile governing coalition yet in what is widely expected to be her last term.

She has argued that the European Union must increasingly look after its own interests in the era of US President Donald Trump, who has questioned long-standing transatlantic defense ties and threatened a trade war.
