Unable to restructure his deal, Cardinals release Tyrann Mathieu

A day after new general manager Brian Gutekunst signed tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson, the Packers are being included among potential landing spots for Pro Bowl defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday. He played a full 16-game regular season for the first time in his career a year ago, finishing with 78 tackles, 2 interceptions and 1 sack.

NFL.com listed the Packers among the seven teams that make sense for the Honey Badger.

Oakland set an NFL record for ineptitude in their secondary in 2017, becoming the first unit to go 10 games without recording an interception in league history. The 25-year-old was clearly prepared to roll the dice on earning a more lucrative contract on the open market. He was scheduled to make $19 million over the next two seasons.

Theis and Smart were both hurt in Sunday's game, with Smart's injury occurring when he dove to the floor. Smart injured his thumb during the Celtics' loss the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time).

Arizona was also able to keep Larry Fitzgerald on the team, he lead the team in receptions (109) yards (1156) and touchdowns (6), he was the only receiver to top 100 receptions and 1000 yards, for the Cardinals.

Despite his desire to remain with the team, a new agreement could not be reached.

Despite the injury, the Cardinals rewarded him with a five-year, $62.5 million contract, with $15.5 million guaranteed.

The Packers are getting a 2016 second-round pick who was thought to be the No. 1 pick a year ago before the combine started. Sherman was due $13 million for the 2018 season and his release gives Seattle a salary cap savings of about $11 million.

"Come to the BLOCK, where all we trying to do is win every game and not get caught up in weirdo stuff", Thomas tweeted at the time.

He tore his left ACL in 2013 and his right one in 2015. Safeties as versatile as the fierce 5-foot-9 Mathieu are hard to find.

Mathieu during his five seasons as a Cardinal was ubiquitous in the Phoenix community. Last season, he had 78 combined tackles, one sack and two interceptions.
