Canadian junior hockey team bus involved in fatal crash

"There is no playbook on what to do in cases like this".

The accident took place on Highway 35, about 30 kilometres north of Tisdale, Sask., near the junction of Highway 335, when a semi-trailer collided with the bus, the RCMP said.

Authorities have yet to identify all of the deceased.

A total of 29 people were on the bus when it crashed.

It was not immediately clear how many people were killed and injured. Fifteen others were injured.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said 28 people including the driver were on the bus at the time, and that fourteen people were killed. Police had said earlier that three of the injured were in critical condition. He was detained initially but is not now in custody and his case is not now being investigated as a criminal investigation.

The bus was carrying the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan junior hockey league to the town of Nipawin for a playoff game. Families who provide homes for players are a large part of junior hockey in Canada, with players spending years with host families.

The hockey world issued messages of condolences, including Saskatchewan native Mike Babcock, who is the Toronto Maple Leafs coach.

Among the dead are Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber. Most of the others list their hometowns as being in the province of Alberta.

The Broncos team is comprised of 24 players, all from Canada, with the youngest aged 16 and the oldest 21.

"It was horrifying", he said, noting there are several "local kids" on the team.

Schools in Williams Lake will be showing their support for the victims of Friday's tragic bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos. A memorial was placed at the site of the crash, about four kilometres east of Swift Current.
