Tue 8:30 | Comparing Stubs: Equal Pay Day

"The gender-based wage gap results in staggering losses that make it harder for women, in MA and across the country, to pay for food and shelter, child care, college tuition, birth control and other healthcare", said Vicki Shabo, National Partnership vice president for workplace policies, in a statement. The disparity is a hot topic of discussion on this day (April 10), Equal Pay Day. The date also is selected to avoid avoid religious holidays and other significant events. Women are five times more likely than men to take a break from work to raise kids, and employees who leave the workforce for a year or more find that their pay upon returning is 7 percent less than a now employed person seeking the same job, according to PayScale's report.

That leads to a yearly pay difference of more than $11,000 and a combined total loss for all women in the commonwealth of more than $23.4 billion each year.

While the oft-repeated "79 cents to a dollar" statistics will no doubt be quoted, it's important to remember the wage gap affects individuals and communities differently and varies according to race, ethnicity and gender identity and expression.

White women in America make about 80 cents for every white male's dollar, while Latina women make 54 cents, and black women make 63 cents, according to the American Association of University Women.
