Japanese man, 112, recognized as world's oldest male

A resident of the island of Hokkaido, Nonaka was born on July 25, 1905 to a large family with seven brothers and one sister.

Masazo Nonaka received a certificate confirming his Guinness World Records title today after the death of Spaniard Francisco Nunez Olivera, 113, the previous record holder. According to local welfare authorities the 112-year-old Nonaka has an insatiable appetite for candies, especially strawberry shortcake.

The 105-year-old inn is now run by his granddaughter Yuko.

"He loves eating any kinds of candies - Japanese or western style", said his granddaughter Yuko Nonaka. Nonaka also spends his time watching TV - sumo wrestling in particular and reading newspapers.

Nonaka is said to be extremely fond of his pets and added if he does not like his dinner he would often give it to his pets, but tries to hide it from his family.

Nonaka has outlived all 7 of his siblings, as well as his wife and 2 of their 5 children.

Although he believes his longevity is because of soaking in hot springs and eating candies, his daughter does not think so.

A man has been found dead and several people are missing after a landslide engulfed houses in southern Japan on Wednesday (April 11), local officials said.

But Nonaka can not claim the Guinness title for the oldest male ever just yet.

Japan has around 68,000 people aged 100 or older in the country, the government said past year.

The greatest authenticated age for any human is 122 years, 164 days by Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who died in 1997.

Canadian junior hockey team bus involved in fatal crash
