Three including Army soldier killed in south Kashmir encounter

Earlier in January, three civilians died when security personnel opened fire to chase away protesters who were throwing stones at an Army convoy passing through Ganovpora village in Shopian district.

After a lull of four days, mayhem returned to Kashmir on Wednesday.

A soldier was martyred and three civilians killed as terrorists clashed with security forces on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, triggering violent street protests. A top police official told Mirror that searches are underway to find out the bodies of the terrorists.

Another injured person, identified as 30-year-old Aijaz Palla, later succumbed in a hospital, a health official said.

"However, the militants had changed the positions during the night and they managed to flee from the area taking advantage of clashes between stone-pelting youth and security forces".

He said Saudi forces also intercepted two missiles in the southern Jizan and Najran provinces close to the border with Yemen. The Houthis have stepped up ballistic missile attacks on the kingdom in what it says is retaliation for the air raids.

Reports said as the encounter was going on hundreds of people marched towards the gunfight site and tried to disrupt the anti-insurgency operation.

He divulged that the clashes between the locals and security forces erupt near the encounter site and that helped the militants escape.

The police were reportedly conducting a search operation in Wani Mohalla of Khudwani when the suspected militants fired at them, IANS reported. Sada Gunakara Rao was 24 years in age and had joined the Army in 2012.

The two civilians killed were identified as Sharjeel Ahmad Sheikh (late 20s) and Bilal Ahmed Tantray (16). The statement was silent on the death of the fourth civilian.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended internet mobile service and ordered closure of educational institution in Kulgam and parts of Anantnag as a precautionary measure.

Reports claim the civilian killings were caused after the local populace hindered in the operation of security forces.
