Oscar-winning director Forman dies at 86

Oscar-winning director Miloš Forman, known for films such as One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus has died at the age of 86, the Czech News Agency reported on Saturday. Milos Forman died in the United States after a short illness, reports the Guardian.

Other films included his 1979 adaptation of hippie musical "Hair", followed by "Ragtime", "Amadeus", "Valmont", "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and "Man on the Moon", in which he directed a deeply in-character Jim Carrey, whose full immersion as comedian Andy Kaufman was chronicled in the recent Netflix documentary "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond".

Born in the town of Caslav east of Prague on February 18, 1932, Forman lost both parents in Nazi concentration camps.

During the 1960s Forman established himself as a director of the dissident Czech New Wave, which took aim at the communist regime, with three classic comedies: "Black Peter", "Loves of a Blonde" and "The Firemen's Ball". He achieved global acclaim with the 1975 Cuckoo's Nest, starring Jack Nicholson and set inside a mental institution.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is one of only three films to win what are considered the five most important Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay (adapted, in this case); the other two are "It Happened One Night" and "The Silence of the Lambs".

Forman won a Best Director Oscar for "The People v. Larry Flint."

However, it took him two years to become a USA citizen.

The film won eight Academy Awards, including Forman's second Oscar for Best Director. The two divorced after four years, and Forman went on to have twin sons with his second wife, actress Vera Kresadlova.

"That is the only way to open the film to a certain kind of lightness", he said.

He received numerous awards, including a Directors Guild of America's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 for motion picture direction. He married Martina Zborilova in 1999. With the latter he had twins boys, Matej and Petr, before leaving Czechoslovakia.
