Over 1000 children abducted by Nigeria's Boko Haram since 2013

Boko Haram has abducted more than 1,000 children in Nigeria since 2013, the United Nations' children's rights arm said a day before the fourth anniversary of the Chibok schoolgirl abductions.

In October 2016, Nigerian officials announce the release of 21 of the girls following talks between the government and Boko Haram, brokered by Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The statement read thus: "It is unfortunate that four years after, all of our daughters have still not been accounted for".

A group of young women shown in a video released by Boko Haram on Monday are purported to be among the more than 200 abducted from Chibok, northeast Nigeria, on April 14, 2014.

"Some of the Chibok parents have since that day began to lose hope and even more psychologically troubled thinking that if the girl Leah is being held back because she is a Christian, it means they may never see their daughters again, because majority that are in captivity now are all Christians".

On April 14, 2015 Nigeria's president-elect Muhammadu Buhari warns he "cannot promise" that the girls will be found, as vigils are held to mark their first year in captivity.

"What troubles and somehow make us feel sad is that it took only 31 days to rescue the Dapchi schoolgirls, while our own here in Chibok is taking up to four years now".

"It is only when we come together to speak and act as one, that our voices will be heard and we can achieve the desired change", he said.

Ezekwesili in a series of tweets, also lashed out on the government over the non-release of Leah Sharibu, the only girl yet to be rescued after Boko Haram kidnapped over 100 girls in Dapchi, Yobe State.

In February, one faction kidnapped more than 100 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi, previously untouched by the war.

According to the organisers, all invitation were duly sent to both state and federal government officials as well as the local government council of Chibok to attend the commemoration service but the event turned out poorly attended.

He further advised the federal government to demand for proof of life, as it carries out negotiations to secure the release of the remaining girls still in captivity.

The President re-affirmed that the government remained focused and determined to see the girls return to their homes.

"We need to know if they are alive or dead". We will continue to persist, and the parents should please not give up.
