Prime Minister inaugurates Defence Expo in Chennai

The helicopter did not fly over the heart of the city where the protesters were going berserk. Modi also took part in the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Adyar Cancer Institute. A group of students - some dressed in black - of the IIT Madras held placards and raised slogans as his convoy passed by.

The non-compliance of the apex court's order has triggered protests across the state.

They were hoisted at the residences of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, party working president M K Stalin, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and other leaders.

Modi was received at the Chennai airport by governor Banwarilal Purohit, defence minister Nirmala Seetharaman, chief minister Edapaddi Palaniwami, deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam and senior officials.

The one protest that seems to have caught the imagination online is the giant black advertising balloon floated by the DMK. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva and leaders of DMK allies wore black dress and marched on the road near the Chennai airport.

Security was beefed up and a large number of police personnel was deployed in and around the Chennai airport to keep the protesters at bay.

Similar black balloon and flag protests were witnessed all over Tamil Nadu. Vaiko called Modi "coward".

At the same time, BJP MPs will be holding protests all over the country and party President Amit Shah will hold a symbolic sit in as well. The protests over the water sharing dispute grew to include opposition to hosting Indian Premier League matches in Chennai, which were eventually shifted out as police said they will not be able to guarantee security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his "bold action" in meeting the country's critical military requirements were contrary to the Congress-led UPA government's "laziness, incompetence or perhaps some hidden motives" that damaged India's defence.

On the defence front, he said his government has taken steps to strengthen and improve manufacturing licenses, exports clearances, Foreign Direct Investment and reforming procurement. Listing his government's initiatives to promote defence production in India, Prime Minister accused the previous UPA government of policy paralysis in the defence sector.
