In Peru, Pence updates allies on US-led airstrikes in Syria

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and US Vice President Mike Pence plan to meet on Saturday on the sidelines of a Summit of the Americas in Peru to discuss ties frayed by NAFTA renegotiations and border tensions. She said the "vast majority of the region's democratic leaders have been so united on addressing the crisis".

That decision was condemned last week by Pena Nieto and opposing candidates for this year's Mexican presidential election.

He says President Donald Trump is sending his regrets that he couldn't attend the summit.

Shortly before Trump's address to the nation Friday night, Pence was whisked away from the summit in his motorcade so he could return to his hotel to inform congressional leaders of the pending missile strikes.

Pence said Saturday in a meeting with Peruvian President Mart?n Vizcarra at the Summit of the Americas in Lima that he's grateful for Vizcarra's role in withdrawing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's invitation to the summit.

On Tuesday, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump would skip the gathering and stay in the United States to monitor the situation in Syria.

The discussions come as Trump's newest national security adviser, John Bolton, stepped into the job this week. Early Wednesday, Trump tweeted: "Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria ".

A summit of Latin American, US and Canadian leaders on Saturday vowed a tougher political stance against corruption with a document making a common "commitment" but offering no enforcement measures.

. He'll also discuss the influence of Chinese trade in the region.

Pence in a visit to Colombia last August did meet and pray with struggling Venezuelan migrants in a trip to Cartagena.

For Pence, the calls and schedule changes served as the latest example of his supporting role here in place of Trump, who pulled out of the summit so he could manage the US response to the suspected chemical attack in Syria.

Cuba is present as in the meeting of peoples from the continent, an activity organized independently from the Summit of the Americas, that has taken place since 1998, when its first edition was held in Santiago de Chile.

"It's not surprising. It shows the priority President Trump gives to Latin America", a Brazilian government source who asked not to be named said.
