Kilkenny People owner's horse pipped at the post in the Grand National

Pleasant Company, with Kilkenny jockey David Mullins on board, had headed the race for most of the four plus miles but over the last fence, Tiger Roll took the lead and pulled away at the elbow.

Davy Russell had been dreaming of winning the Grand National since he was a kid - and his dream finally came true when he rode Tiger Roll to a dramatic victory at a sun-drenched Aintree.

Bless The Wing, another Elliott-trained horse, finished third with Anibale Fly fourth, completing an Irish clean sweep of the places.

Remarkably, Tiger Roll, owned by Gigginstown House Stud, was also the victor of the Virtual Grand National, a computer-simulated running of the race broadcast on ITV last night.

The statement read thus: "It is unfortunate that four years after, all of our daughters have still not been accounted for". In February, one faction kidnapped more than 100 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi, previously untouched by the war.

'I was thinking of my mum, my family at home, the kids and all the times that dad used to cut the grass, ' said Russell.

"But it's just surreal, I don't think it's set in yet, I can't believe it".

Tiger Roll was already firmly established as a yard favourite, having won for the third time at Cheltenham in March, this time landing the Cross-Country Chase.

"This one is for Pat Smullen".

"I said I didn't appreciate the first time round. That's racing and I'm very lucky that I won it two years ago". "There was no real lightbulb moment that we realised Gordon was going to turn himself into what he has done, when he won the National first time I was like 'who is he?'"

Bryony Frost, one of three women jockeys in the race attempting to make history by being the first female victor, was fifth on Milansbar.

It was also a second success in three years for owner, Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary.

The one protest that seems to have caught the imagination online is the giant black advertising balloon floated by the DMK. A group of students - some dressed in black - of the IIT Madras held placards and raised slogans as his convoy passed by.
