Egypt army says 8 soldiers killed in Sinai attack

"The armed forces were able today to foil a large terrorist operation", the military said.

Six of the jihadists were killed by aerial bombardment on their hideouts while 12 died in a shoot out with police forces, the military said in a statement.

Eight Egyptian soldiers and 14 militants were killed in a confrontation in central Sinai on Saturday, the army said in a statement. Four of them detonated their explosive belts, killing the soldiers and wounding 15 others, it added.

Terrorism rose in Egypt following the military ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against Morsi's one-year rule and his now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group. Extremist groups are spread North Sinai, including Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis that pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014.

North Sinai province, the northern part of the peninsula, has been the center of a wave of terrorist attacks that killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers over the past few years, with a Sinai-based group affiliated with the regional Islamic State terror group claiming responsibility for a lot of them.

More than 100 jihadists and at least 22 soldiers have been killed in the wider-ranging operation launched on February 9, according to army figures.
