Apple will use its own chips in Macs, replacing Intel

Apple's interest in developing in-house chips for the Mac came past year. It's an advantage Apple has enjoyed in the mobile space for years. In its stead, the tech giant will be designing its own chips to power Macs.

However, Bloomberg reported that the whole effort is still in its early stages, and Apple could theoretically abandon or delay the plan. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Intel declined to comment.

Intel Corporation shares were trading at $48.42 per share on Monday afternoon, down $3.66 (-7.03%). But even with the sharp drop, the stock's price remains higher than it was just six weeks ago. But there's also the increasingly embarrassing performance issue. However, Apple itself is similarly concerned with production costs: the company has been using Intel-branded chips in Mac systems for years, necessitating a business relationship between the two companies and forcing Apple engineers to work around the design limitations of outside-sourced chips. Prior to its release, the MacBook Pro used Apple's T1 chip. The Company's segments are Client Computing Group (CCG), Data Center Group (DCG), Internet of Things Group (IOTG), Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group (NSG), Intel Security Group (ISecG), Programmable Solutions Group (PSG), All Other and New Technology Group (NTG). It was announced in 2005, and the first laptops with Intel shipped in 2006.

Much like how Apple brought its own in-house designed chips to its iOS devices, the company is planning to do the same for its Macs. Marshwinds Advisory Co.'s holdings in Intel were worth $4,096,000 at the end of the most recent reporting period.

Apple might screw Intel over. starting in 2020. "I could imagine a few amped up iOS-based MacBooks, but not a wholesale 2020 change to all Macs".

Apple now features its own silicon in iOS and Apple Watch devices and backs up the MacBook's Intel CPU with its own architecture when it comes to some of the laptop's features.

Still, KeyBanc analysts in Portland estimate that works out to somewhere between $2.8 billion and $3.4 billion in annual revenue for Intel.
