Chelsea overpower Southampton 3-2 in EPL encounter

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has told his players not to play to please him but rather show more commitment to the club in the last few weeks of the season.

Chelsea can still win the FA Cup but are 10 points off the top four with only six league fixtures remaining, and their manager distanced himself from the responsibilities he believes lie with the club.

The victory keeps alive fifth-place Chelsea's slim hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League with seven points now separating the champions from Tottenham and Liverpool above them.

However, Conte's opposite number Mark Hughes was unhappy that Alonso had escaped a red card and has called for the player to receive a retrospective ban ahead of next week's FA Cup semi-final between the two clubs.

"From the beginning we were convinced we could win this game but they are a top team". - Jan Bednarek is only the third Polish player to score in the Premier League, after Robert Warzycha in 1992 and Marcin Wasilewski in 2015 - Olivier Giroud has netted 19 goals in the Premier League as a sub, a haul only Jermain Defoe can better (24).

They were the first goals for Chelsea in the Premier League for Giroud, who gained a reputation as a so-called "super-sub" in his time at Arsenal before moving to Stamford Bridge in January. "For sure, in the first half I was very disappointed for the way we were playing".

Conte admitted his side had delivered a "very disappointing" first-half performance at St Mary's in his post-match interview but added his praise for his players' response.

And with Southampton reeling, Giroud completed Chelsea's comeback when he pounced on a loose ball inside the area to drive into the bottom corner.

"The most important thing is never give up, believe in our quality, play our game and I am proud of what we have done today with our incredible support". "We have never commented about the negative refereeing decisions, especially after the game. We showed the right fire in our eyes".

It was a former Chelsea player who got Saints off to a ideal start as Ryan Bertrand burst past Cesar Azpilicueta down Southampton's left before squaring for Tadic to apply a simple finish. In the second half I saw a great reaction, the right will to fight to win despite the difficultly. I think between the referee, linesman or fourth official that one of them should have seen it.

"We've got to stick our chests out, get on with it, start being men and take responsibility".
