Macron tells Putin he wants to 'intensify' Syria dialogue

Macron made the confession while appearing in a two-hour live broadcast on French television BFM and online investigative site Mediapart.

The leader of the much left France Insoumise celebration, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, accused Mr. Macron on Twitter of attacking Syria with no proof of chemical weapons use and without a United Nations mandate, a Eu agreement or Even a vote of the French Parliament.

"We convinced him it was necessary to stay for the long term".

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg later expressed support for the strikes by its three member states, saying that they "will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons".

British Prime Minister Theresa May also said she had authorised British forces to conduct strikes against Syria.
