One action Barbara Bush took as she left her role as first lady echoes the sentiments she previously expressed on gay rights.

In a statement released by Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath, the nation's 41st president says the outpouring of love and friendship to Barbara Bush following her death Tuesday "is lifting us all up". The other was former First Lady Abigail Adams. "Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was", George W. Bush wrote.

Barbara Bush was 92 and the couple had been married 73 years - longer than any couple in presidential history.

"I chose literacy because I honestly believed that if more people could read, write, and comprehend, we would be that much closer to solving so numerous problems that plague our nation and our society", Bush said.
