Two Seismic Events At Mine Where Miners Are Trapped

Four South African miners have died in a mine about 70 kilometers west of Johannesburg, the mining company said in a statement on Friday. They will be put back in soon once we have done our assessment.

Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson James Wellsted said the rescue operation had been temporarily halted on Friday afternoon after two seismic events. "We pulled them out for safety".

"Proto teams have been sent underground to look for the eight missing workers who are still trapped underground", he said.

Wellsted said there will be an investigation done by both the company and the Department of Mineral Resources. "While we appreciate that there was a tremor underground at Masakhane, COSATU still demands more action from government to force companies to adhere to safety regulations".

The problem is that the conditions are extremely risky and hard and we need to be careful about putting other employees and the rescue team at risk.

It said six employees were in hospital, and efforts were continuing to locate the remaining and unaccounted for workers.
