Senate insists IGP unfit for public office

"The Senate views this persistent refusal as a great danger to our democracy and hence the Senate resolved to declare IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria".

The lawmakers summoned Idris to appear on May 2 by 11 a.m.

Clarifying that section which revealed limits of the senate in inviting individuals, Falana said that even President Muhammadu Buhari and governors can not be summoned by the senate.

Mr Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has been receiving treatment at the hospital since reportedly jumping out of a moving police vehicle after police officers allegedly sprayed tear gas at him on May 24.

Irked by that behaviour, the senate on Tuesday passed a vote of no confidence on the IGP and declared him unfit to hold any public office.

According to the statement, the arrest and detention of the embattled Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dino Melaye, has been overtaken by events.

"The delegated Officers went with a brief of the Inspector-General of Police on the matter to the Senate to enable the Senate appreciate the issues raised to guide their resolutions on the matter but the Senate refused to listen to the Officers delegated by the Inspector-General of Police in line with his powers recognized by both the Constitution and the Police Act and Regulations".

Igbodo, who hinted that the police was going to challenge the position of the Senate in court, said, "That declaration, we are going to challenge it".

Dino Melaye is simply holding on to straw. The Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force will not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed from the enforcement of Law and Order and ensuring that the Rule of Law prevails.

"The CP therefore calls on Nigerians to support the Inspector General of Police in the onerous task of policing the nation and the restoration of peace, law and order in the country".

"Under the extant constitution the President can only remove the Inspector General of Police after consultation with the National Police Council which has membership drawn largely from the Executive arm of government".
