Iran turns to China as Europe tries to save nuclear deal

During the Sunday meeting, Zarif elaborated on the condition of the Iran nuclear deal before and after the United States pullout and said Washington broke the multi-lateral agreement and flagrantly violated the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

After meeting officials in Beijing Sunday, Zarif will continue his whirlwind diplomatic tour by flying to Moscow and Brussels to consult with the remaining signatories to the agreement.

The Iranian nuclear deal is a result of multilateral efforts contributing to the protection of the worldwide non-proliferation regime, and supporting peace and stability in the Middle East, Wang added.

Iran's foreign minister has has held talks in China as he began a diplomatic tour with the remaining signatories of a multinational nuclear deal following the recent U.S. withdrawal from the landmark 2015 pact. Tehran has repeatedly said that it would never accept re-negotiating the nuclear deal.

"China is highly concerned with the direction of the Iranian nuclear issue and is willing to maintain communication with all relevant parties, including Iran", said Geng Shuang, spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry.

Zarif, who is set to hold talks with his opposite number Wang Yi, hailed Tehran's relations with Beijing, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

Prior to leaving Iran, Zarif published a government statement via Twitter criticising Trump's "extremist administration" for abandoning "an accord recognised as a victory of diplomacy by the worldwide community".

"I hope and believe that these visits to multiple countries will improve countries', including China's, understanding of Iran's position", Wang said.

China offers Iran a valuable alternative to trade with the USA and Europe.

Trump hit back on Saturday evening, tweeted that the accord had failed to contain Iran's militarism.

Washington's five other partners in the deal have already taken turns to denounce Trump's attack on the multilateral Iran deal, vowing that they would stick to their commitments under the accord despite the U.S. withdrawal.
