Facebook suspends 200 apps for possible misuse of user information

Facebook has suspended roughly 200 apps suspected of misusing data they have gathered on the social media site, a vice president at the company said on Monday.

The 200 apps are suspended pending an investigation into whether they did in fact misuse data.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in late March that Facebook would restrict the amount of data apps have access to while investigating how these apps used the data before the restrictions were enacted.

The company also said that "large teams of internal and external experts" have already looked into "thousands of apps". The app collected data such as user location, friends, and interests.

The investigation was launched after revelations that Cambridge Analytica hijacked the private data of 87 million Facebook users while working for Donald Trump's presidential campaign in 2016.

The suspensions were part of the first phase of an ongoing investigation and the company suggested that there will likely be more. On top of that, it's not year clear the full extent of data misuse by the suspended apps.
