Indian PM Modi to visit Russian Federation for informal summit with Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russian Federation next week for a one-on-one "informal" meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the summer beach resort of Sochi on the Black Sea.

In a surprise announcement, MEA said this afternoon it would be "an important occasion for the two leaders to exchange views on global matters in a broad and long-term perspective". "Both leaders will also discuss their respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters". Last week, just after U.S. withdrew from JCPOA, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Moscow for consultations.

It said the "informal summit" is in "keeping with the tradition of regular consultations" between India and Russian Federation at the highest levels. Doval, who was accompanied by foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale on the May 10 visit, is understood to have proposed this informal summit.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes between Taliban and security forces over the past few months. In 2017 insurgents tried three times to overrun the capital, according to the Afghanistan Analysts Network.

At the same time, India has become entwined into the fracas between Moscow and Washington with concerns that Indian purchase of S-400 missile defence system would trigger United States sanctions related to CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act of 2017).

Sources said that the India-Russia informal summit will not supplant the annual summit, which will be held in India later this year. India had abstained from voting at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on the chemical weapons attack in the United Kingdom which Russian Federation viewed as a support for its position. Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a similar informal summit in China last month.

He went to college and business school there, then briefly moved across the OH border to do some accounting for a steel company. The announcement came shortly after an article in Sports Illustrated linked him to allegations of sexual harassment.

The meeting between the two world leaders comes as a surprise as both Modi and Putin are set to meet quite a few times this year. The proposed summit meet between leaders of India and Russian Federation can do a lot in terms of making upon India's long-standing relationship with Russian Federation.

The Modi-Putin summit is taking place under the shadow of the growing friendship between Moscow and Islamabad, much to the discomfort of India.
