Kaspersky Lab to open customer data centre in Switzerland by 2020

Kaspersky Lab's user data should be moved to Zurich, Switzerland by the end of 2019.

Today's confirmation of an infrastructure move to Switzerland comes hot on the heels of a comment from the Netherlands government that use of the Russian firm's software is a bit risky.

The most important goal of our Global Transparency Initiative is to establish all reviewing processes in such a way that there will be no need to rely on our word alone about the integrity of our products, updates, detection rules, data storage, and things like that.

Kaspersky Lab is to move a number of core processes from Russian Federation to Switzerland.

Kaspersky Security Network is the cloud-based system through which Kaspersky collects data from the computers of its business customers, in order to spot and combat threats.

The same goes for the data processed by Kaspersky Security Network: Storing it in Switzerland under the supervision of an independent organization means that any access to this data is meticulously logged - and the logs can be reviewed at any moment should any concerns arise.

This move is a part of a larger plan that the company had announced in October 2017, called the Global Transparency Initiative.

"Kaspersky Lab is arranging for the data storage and processing, software assembly, and source code to be independently supervised by a third party qualified to conduct technical software reviews".

Ivanka Trump Has 'Great Joy' Going to Jerusalem Embassy Opening on Monday
A signature campaign promise, Trump's December announcement of the embassy move led to major protests in Gaza and the West Bank. On May 14, in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Armon HaNatziv /East Talpiyot, United States Embassy will officially open.

Kaspersky Lab will also relocate to Zurich its "software build conveyer" - a set of programming tools used to assemble ready-to-use software out of source code. The Dutch Government announced a similar move this week. "The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates USA national security", the department said at the time.

Kaspersky has repeatedly denied these allegations, but the company claims that it is working with others to "address growing challenges of industry fragmentation" and "a breakdown of trust".

"We considered several locations for our first Transparency Center, and Switzerland most closely met our criteria as well as our policy of complete neutrality", Stefan Rojacher, Kaspersky Lab's corporate communications & public affairs manager said. This approach will further show that generation after generation of Kaspersky Lab products were built and used for one goal only: protecting the company's customers from cyberthreats. "Since transparency and trust are becoming universal requirements across the cybersecurity industry, Kaspersky Lab supports the creation of a new, non-profit organisation to take on this responsibility, not just for the company, but for other partners and members who wish to join", Kaspersky added.
